Crime Stoppers program originated in Albuquerque, New Mexico in July 1976, after the unsolved murder of Michael Carmen during a night shift at a gas station. With no leads after two weeks, Detective Greg MacAleese partnered with a local TV station to create a reenactment of the crime, offering a $1,000.00 reward for information. Within 72 hours, a person called in with crucial details, identifying a car leaving the scene, but admitted fear had prevented him from coming forward earlier.
This experience highlighted how fear and apathy kept the public from sharing information. In response, MacAleese developed a system where people could anonymously submit tips, incentivized by cash rewards. The program leveraged media to engage the community in solving unsolved crimes.
In 1985 Niagara successfully started its Crime Stoppers program and has been helping the community ever since. The mission has always been to empower community members to anonymously report crimes, leading to arrests and contributing to overall public safety. We have achieved remarkable accomplishments in crime prevention and community safety. With the collaboration of citizens, Niagara Regional Police Service, and the media, we have successfully resolved numerous cases, leading to significant arrests and the prevention of various criminal activities.
Over the years, Crime Stoppers of Niagara has created partnerships with local businesses, community groups, schools, Niagara Region and Niagara Regional Police Service to spread awareness, gain supporters, and create a culture of crime prevention.
